Pet FAQ

If I neuter my cat, will he stop spraying my furniture? When a cat sprays, he is exhibiting the male tendency to mark his territory with urine. Neutering decreases his male hormones and makes him much less likely to exhibit this undesirable trait (Although - neutering does not guarantee that he will stop spraying).

Heartworms
Author: Dr. Peay on Jul 18, 2002 - 11:23 PM

Current Pet News A recent survey, conducted by the American Heartworm Society, found that 250,000 dogs and cats tested positive for heartworm infection nationwide in 2001. The survey was sponsored by Merial, manufacturer of the Heartgard heartworm prevention products, and was the first since the 1950s to track heartworm disease in detail. Heartworm tests performed by 18,000 veterinary clinics nationwide were analyzed to determine the results.

Reported cases were highest in the Southeast and in Texas, which led the list of states with the most reported cases—38,535 dogs were reported positive and 362 cats. Florida saw the highest number of cases in cats (743) and was second in total cases. Louisiana, North Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama, and Indiana rounded out the top 10. Mississippi with 73% of the clinics reporting had 11,522 canine and 107 feline cases positive for heartworms.
According to a June 2001 Gallup survey, only 55 percent of dogs in the United States are on a heartworm preventive, down from 66 percent in 1998.
In the southeast heartworm preventative should be given year-round.
